I flew South for the holiday, bundled up in a tiny airplane nest with my knees up against my chest and a blanket wrapping my body in a deep hug.
Virginia feels wet, even though it's not raining. I forgot trees could be this close together, or even look this green. My brother and the pines seem to have grown dramatically, leaving me nostalgic for the time he once was able to comfortably stand under the kitchen counter.
I forgot about Virginia noise, so different from Los Angekes. Rather than car horns and ocean laps, we have twittering beetles and cheers from the Pitt fans on TV. My father drinks iced tea while my mother naps, sleepy from making super yummy shrimp, avocado, and tomato salad, and our post red-eye trek down to the Leesburg Farmer's Market and Layered Cake Patisserie.
After the farmer's market, I slept a sleep that felt so cozy it was sinful. Waking up, realizing it was nearing late afternoon, and smelling my home smells brought warranted comfort, and I've since been lounging with tea, lemon cake, and a tall stack of cookbooks.
Getting a taste of southern summer has me craving some indulgent treats. Food 52 hits it right on the noggin with Tomato and Cream Cheese Turnovers (they look like pop-tarts!!!) and Raspberry Swamp Pie. A little secret part of me is thinking of Fall, and then I get super excited for this Sparkling Cider Pumpkin Beertail.
